I’m not going to write about the financial markets: I don’t know what more there is to say, that hasn’t been written on this blog about the political origins in Florida of the credit crisis. It was here that the gears and ratios of a Growth Machine worked to cement a political orthodoxy that is coming apart at the seams. What I want to write about, briefly, is John McCain’s spurious claim that he will see to it that we have “victory” in Iraq.

A more reckless, irresponsible claim is scarcely imaginable. Ever since George Bush and the neocons propelled the nation to war in Iraq, I have wondered what “victory” looks like. We aren’t fighting an identifiable army. We can’t conquer the nation militarily. There is no chance of grafting democracy on tribal and religious fiefdoms that are still slitting throats over thousand year old grievances.

Every reader of this blog should rush out to read Robert Baer’s new book, “The Devil We Know: dealing with the new Iranian superpower“. This is the first book I have read that lays out a plausible scenario for how the mess our oil addiction caused, will play out.

It does not end with anything resembling “victory” for the United States.

This man works as a Carvalho impersonator. He is available for parties, bar mitzvahs, and to fill the lustful needs of any Herald reporters who don’t want to face ethics charges.

So, the School Board ratified Albert Carvalho’s superintendent contract, but only for two years, not the expected three. Still though, it’s amazing that he got the contract at all after a panel found his hiring unethical and that whole alleged affair with The Herald’s ex-education reporter. Especially since no one has fully explained what’s so great about this guy that we should ignore all of that and put him in charge of the fourth biggest school district in the country.

I wish it was like the stock market or The Miami Hurricanes and we could watch it crumble before our eyes and tell ourselves “it’s ok, we have to bottom out before we rebuild,” but we’re talking about an organization responsible for the education of 385,655 students. So here’s hoping Carvalho’s hire was worth it. The pressure’s on, buddy, don’t screw it up.

The Dolphins (and hey, The Golden Panthers, too!) continued their surprising winning streak last weekend. Meanwhile the young Canes continued their heartbreaking streak of staggering greenness. Will the streaks continue for another week? That is why you tune in to find out. I am not a psychic. Sorry.

Miami Dolphins @ Houston Texans, Sunday at 1:00pm on CBS 4
Houston is with out a win, and Miami knows how that feels. Maybe they’ll be good sportsman and give Houston the game. Not! (hahahaha….haha…ha?) No, but seriously it’s not like Miami is strong enough to take this game for granted and Houston could easily take this one. The morale downturn caused by loosing to a win-less team could be disastrous. That said, I still feel confidant rooting for the home team.

UCF Golden Knights @ UM Hurricanes, 3:45 pm on ESPNU
We lost to UF and FSU, and with USF still sitting pretty in the polls this is the battle for who can claim to be the fourth best college team in the state. It’s the first meeting for the teams, and safe money is on the Canes. So unless The Golden Knights lance through our rebuilding plans or whatever, expect to be chanting “We’re Number Four! We’re Number Four!”

Middle Tennesee State University Blue Raiders @ FIU Goldent Panthers, Saturday at 7:00pm on WINZ ( 940 AM)
FIU lost to MTSU 47-6 last year, but FIU is confidant like they haven’t been in years. Whatever, it’s FIU, I am not even going to pretend half as hard as I do with the other teams that I know what I’m talking about, but go Golden Panthers! I hope the golden showers of victory rain down upon you!

I am trying to remember the politics of The Golden Girls. All I recall is that on one episode they were campaigning for some Miami Councilmen or something, and the dirty, dirty press insinuated that Blanche was sleeping with him, but it turned out he was really a FTM transexual. Sounds about right for a local political scandal.

Anyway, you’d think old ladies would vote for the Old Guy/Lady ‘08 ticket, but Betty White is in the tank for Obama as evidenced by her recent appearance on The Late Late Show. Basically, Betty is down with the swirl, and playfully ribs McCain for being an old, even if she is 14 years his senior.
